Barriers and Beyond
Video installation
This collaboration between Terry Berkowitz (New York), Varsha Nair (Bangkok) and Karla Sachse (Berlin), is a collage of walls they have discovered around the world as seen from different perspectives. The work was conceived of and realized via the exchange of images, sounds and conversations amongst the 3 artists entirely via the internet.
Terry Berkowitz includes a portion of the video from A Rock and A Hard Place, shown at the Whitney Museum of American Art in New York in 1992; as well as images from Teotichuacan and the DMZ in South Korea. Varsha Nair continues to explore issues of home and displacement. Her component of the work features images of Mobareke, a Zoroastrian village in Iran. Karla Sachse includes current photos of German bunkers left behind on Denmark's west coast since 1945, and a poem she realized on the Berlin Wall on 22nd November 1989 (it was painted over by unemployed former guards on the same night).
