Womanifesto workshop 2001, group of participants
WOMANIFESTO : an International Art Exchange
Womanifesto was established as a biennale by a group of women artists, writers and activists with the aim of hosting gatherings of women artists from Asian and other countries.
Womanifesto I and Womanifesto II were held in Bangkok in 1997 and 1999 as a gallery exhibition and an outdoor event in a public park, respectively. Unlike its previous manifestations, in 2001 Womanifesto held a workshop on a farm near Kantaraluk, Si Saket, Thailand, with no formal exhibition planned thereafter; and in 2003 as a publication, Procreation/Postcreation. In 2005/6 it was a web project, No Man’s Land, which explored ways in which culture is promoted by states to increase a sense of national identity.
While the original aim of Womanifesto was to strengthen links between and the visibility of women artists in the region, that aim developed to include exploration and valuing of local cultures, including artisanship. In 2008 a residency project was established, explicitly to explore the links between traditional and contemporary art practices.
