- illuminated are iconic female figures in this recent series from the ongoing body of work referencing an ancient Indian text that sets social codes, particularly prescribing women’s lesser position in society. In many cultures similar didactic texts have long been imprinted on the bodies of women, get ingrained in the collective mindset, and continue to reinforce a patriarchal order. Since 1997, Nair has tackled the same text – presenting performances, installations, collages, assemblages, and animations as an antidote to dislodge this order. Unbinding the book, punching out pages and layering the residue is to pick apart and remake, and continue to offer newly reconfigured readings and meanings.
